As the year 2000 approaches, I begin the difficult job of making my resolutions and hoping this time some how I get a few things right. I'll remember to say something kind to
the cashier who's overworked, hurried, and tired, because it only takes a few minutes to bring a smile to someone who is working hard that I don't even know.
I'll stop a moment to pull shirts in different shades off the top rack for the lady in Walmart who is in an electric wheelchair, not because I have any extra time, but because I can. I'll pause in the aisle at the grocery store and wait on the elderly lady to get her cart past mine for as long as it takes with a smile on my face without getting impatient and while doing so, I'll take that time to chat with her and make her laugh when I ask her if she wants to race. I'll continue to call my mother to ask her about her day and tell her about mine, not because I did anything special, but because I know how important it is that I call my mother to tell her I love her while she's still alive-- tomorrow she may not be. I'll e-mail my friend who just discovered her contract is running out on her job and feeling down about it to remind her what a talented, special person she is with fans hiding in the wings and this is merely a step up to better things. I'll tell my husband how much I love him and appreciate him for being a kind man, a good father, and a wonderful husband, not because I think he doesn't know those things, but because I know how important it is that he hear it from my lips. I'll tell my child I love her and I think she's such a cool kid when I drop her off at school and when I hear her reply, "I know, mom, you tell me all the time," I'm going to smile, because I'll know some how between all these Year 2000 resolutions I'm getting my job right.
