Da Majiang!
By Alena Tansey

I learned a new game.
Or rather, remembered an old one.
Old mind against new,
Wisdom against wit.

The age old battle.
But luck is with the aged,
For youth is always one step away from
Realization of a dream.

Can I, who have just learned the steps,
Dance the lead?
Or will age, wisdom, and time
Take the stage?

I am rash, if inspired,
But will I win?
What I see as glory,
What she sees as practice.

The bones are washed,
The dice are rolled.
Calculations made,
Now either skill or
Enthusiasm shall prevail.

I concentrate,
She does not notice.
Seeming effortless,
She wins, again.

A poem of my struggles playing Majiang against Tibetan grandmothers!
