Women's Journeys - An Empowerment Place

YEAH! No Chicks on the Tix!
A Letter from Michael Moore
Tuesday, August 8, 2000

Dear friends,

Women put up with a lot of crap, but this year's Presidential farce has to take the cake.

We now have four men on the "two" major party tickets running for the White House. Neither candidate, Democrat nor Republican, even bothered to CONSIDER a woman for Vice President, let alone appoint one.

Women: 53% of the population -- the MAJORITY gender -- and once again, there is ZERO representation. The minority still rules, still calls the shots, still holds the reins of power. That's called "apartheid."

You know what amazes me? That neither Gore nor Bush even tried to PRETEND they were considering a woman for Vice President! In the past, the all-male Presidential candidates have at least "floated" some  names, or said "so-and-so" was on "the short list." They thought women might be upset if it looked like they were being ignored. So they played the game of interviewing "Pat Schroeder" for the job, or mentioning "Elizabeth Dole" as a "possibility."

No more.

This year, in what appears to be a political version of "battered women's syndrome," guy politicians have discovered that they don't have to do a damn thing to placate women voters. They are convinced women will just take it -- in silence. And just as Dick Cheney is the true face of George W. Bush, Joe Lieberman is the true face of Al Gore. Lieberman's number one financial backer in Connecticut is the insurance industry -- and when they say "jump," he leaps. He even opposed Clinton's watered-down health insurance bill. He is an enemy of affirmative action. He has voted for tax cuts for the rich, voted for NAFTA,  supports a form of prayer ("the minute of silence") in the public schools (and the granting of vouchers to help fund religious schools), and joined Al Gore as one of only 10 Democrats in the Senate who supported Bush the First in starting the Gulf War.

In short, a real guy's guy.

Of course, not to beat a dead Corvair, there is a candidate who is now, according to Tim Russert on "Meet the Press" last Sunday, polling between 11% and 15% in some surveys, and has chosen a woman as his running mate. His name is Ralph Nader and HER name is Winona LaDuke . She is a Harvard graduate from Minnesota and a Native American. She has a bunch of wild ideas women usually come up with, the kinds of things that probably keep them off  the other tickets -- like, everybody should be guaranteed insurance if they get sick, or working moms and kids deserve day care, or maybe we shoud build a few less submarines in Connecticut and build a few new  schools in the Bronx. Stuff like that. Chick stuff, ya know. Stuff us guys ain't got time for.

Ralph and Winona have tripled their standing in the polls since they started. There is a momentum taking place and maybe, just maybe, the majority - women - will rise up and say enough of this male apartheid.

Yours,
Michael Moore

Comments:

I've been thinking of voting for Ralph Nader over the past few months, (since I heard of him) but have been afraid that it will just put George DoubleYa in the white house by not voting for Gore, (the lesser of 2 evils). I think if I can help get the word out that Ralph has a woman running mate and what they stand for,  we may just be able to see a change in DC. Reading this article of yours is the first, "in your face" account that I've read about the duo and I applaud you for your candor.

Together, their team is the most EARTH FRIENDLY partnership we could hope for!  YOU CAN HELP!  If you haven't registered to vote, here's a link to a place that will register you to vote, fill out the online form & when they send you a card, sign that and send it in. Please don't give up! I have seen many celebrities and "whatnot" on Politically Incorrect who intend on voting for Ralph Nader! I'm throwing caution to the wind this year and hope to get all my commodores to do the same!  First, we must get the word out that we're PISSED that Nader and Buchanan or Hagelin have been excluded from the debates because they don't have the new 15% voter approval and sign petitions and write newspapers that could change this!

I hope the Women's Journeys readers appreciated reading it and possibly, just possibly it will put them over the edge to throw caution to the wind to vote their conscious this  term! I know I will. Thanks for the permission to share this here, Mike!

Oregon seems to have the greatest percentage of Nader supporters in the
nation. I am one of them, and voted my hopes rather than my fears (our election is 100% mail-in). I'm in my late 50's, and simply cannot continue to support a "less evil" candidate. In 1968 I voted for Pegasus, a pig, that was the standard bearer of the California Peace and Freedom party. That vote probably helped Richard Nixon become president, but in retrospect, would Hubert Humphrey have been that different? I doubt it. So C'mon, dream with me, and vote for the only candidate that will represent the average guy. We can take our country back if we have the guts to back our only real representative, Ralph Nader. Please don't vote for a bad guy because he tells you the other guy is even worse. We can do better.

I was listening to a radio program in our area today and was surprised yet
frustrated. It was a poll in which the people called in and told who they were voting for. Nader won in the poll which utterly surprised me. What frustrated me was how many people called in to say they wanted to vote for Nader but, they were going to vote for Gore because they did not want Bush in the White House. These people were begging us Nader voters to please not waste our votes and vote for Gore. I believe that my vote is not being wasted but, that voting for someone I do not want as president would be a wasted vote. How can we the people convince others not to vote this way? I also believe that if we all just stuck to the candidate we really want in office it could all work out.

Nader is a nut! Socialism is not the answer. I know most Nader supporters
are either young naive college kids...burnt out old hippies or naive women who don't have a clue and actually believe the liberal media every night. How in the world can anybody vote for this communist who is tagged a consumer advocate. There nothing courageous about being a leftist. It is pure cowardice and Nader is the King of all cowards.

Note, this person did NOT leave a valid e-mail address, so we really know who the coward is. Since I couldn't respond personally, I'll post your comments here, if you have them! - Ro

9 November, 2K, we still don't know WHO our president will be and I received this from one of my cyber pals to put here:

As I sit waiting to exhale…waiting on results of the Presidential election..listening to Sam Taylor, I can't help but think of my friend Ro…yes …I can say that with confidence…she's a friend of mine.…but yet,  we are so different…Here I am a conservative and very much outspoken black women….who has Undoubtedly voted for George W….and there's my pal Ro…very white...very liberal.....No doubt about her vote…Yet…I can stand here today and say I love her unconditionally……And I feel in my heart…she me.  So here the country stands…divided 50/50….Our future so questioned…….yet…. I am not depressed or overwhelmed….Deep down…I know America will arise to the occasion….As always…as in times gone by…we will rely on what we have in common…to draw us back together…….Here's to you Ro……Thanks for Sam…and that outstanding blind violinist…They have seen me through much turmoil this year…. Kiss the babies for me pal.
